So as many of you who have come to clinic now know, often where you feel the pain is often not the root cause and the pain is being felt because of an issue in a completely different area of your body.

This does not have to be structural or muscular. Do you have a scar that could be the cause of your pain?

Scars are often something people forget about once healed and never give them another thought unless they are unlucky enough to feel pain or numbness in that area.

Remember any scar whether it be from surgery or trauma isn’t meant to be there. People are amazed at how often the restrictions of the scar are responsible for problems they are experiencing elsewhere in the body, for example C-sections and appendix scarring can both be responsible for lower back pain! (As well as headaches, digestion issues and knee pain in my experience.)

In my opinion, scars are probably one of the most over-looked causes of pain and restriction.

Apart from feeling and looking unpleasant, a scar can cause:

  • Restrictions in the fascia
  • Reduction in blood and lymph flow
  • Weakened muscular strength
  • Reduce the flow of energy
  • Inhibit joint movement

Scars can also ‘hold’ a wide range of emotions due to the traumatic events that created them and often without you realising.

Don’t take my word for it. Below are just a handful of testimonials from clients who have all benefited from MSTR scar work…..

“I started attending Bowen Therapy to get an acute shoulder problem sorted. During the course of the treatment, I started having issues with my right heel as well which was hindering my mobility.

Jules Wilson, my therapist at Norfolk Bowen Therapy, noticed the scar tissue on my Achilles where I had ruptured it playing football in 1992. The scar tissue was raised and extremely tight. She began treatment over a number of months and now the scar tissue on my Achilles is greatly reduced and no longer tight. The issues with my heel have largely disappeared.

My only regret is not having this treatment years ago when I first had the injury.

I want to pay tribute, not only to Jules obvious skill, but also her persistence and determination to solve the problem. My shoulder is also so much better by the way!

I cannot recommend Jules and Norfolk Bowen Therapy highly enough.”
A very grateful Mike

“I have been having Bowen treatment now for some time for my back ailments. About 6 months ago Jules suggested that she should work on a scar that I have on my stomach. I agreed and amazingly enough it helped my back problems. I found the treatment on my scar different to what I was having on my back, Jules seemed to work her way all the way across my scar and I felt a change that I can’t really put into words.” LB

“In August 2016 I had an accident where my leg went through a glass panel door causing extensive nerve damage and cutting through approx. 40% of my calf muscle. As a runner that is disastrous.

I had been struggling getting back running longer distances, so I made an appointment to see Jules. Not only has she straightened out my ‘wonky’ hips, but she has released the scar tissue that was holding my muscles tight around the injury site.

She has worked so hard on my scar. Initially it looked lumpy, but now it is flatter. Working on the scar tissue has meant the area is no longer tight, restricting my flexibility and pulling. It appears that some nerves have also repaired. So much so, I am now training for my first Ultra Trail Marathon!” NF

So quite often clients are surprised about how many children they see come to the clinic. Bowen therapy isn’t just for us adults you know!

A baby/child Bowen treatment is a very gentle experience. Treatment can be on the couch, a chair, parent’s lap or even playing with toys on the floor and generally take around 15-20 minutes.

However especially for children who have had to spend a lot of time at the Doctors or in hospital, coming into a clinic environment can often be a daunting prospect so when the weather allows sessions often take place outside feeding my chickens or going to see Annie the Donkey or Teddy the Polish shire horse! What often surprises a lot of clients is that Bowen therapy doesn’t just address musculoskeletal issues. A growing percentage of my work is addressing symptoms of a hormonal and organic origin.

Having already covered a lot of theory in my basic training, last year I travelled to Yorkshire to attend a course titled “Hormone Release – The Bowen Way”. (more…)

Sciatica is the name given to any sort of pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve and describes the symptoms of leg pain—and possibly tingling, numbness, or weakness—that originate in the lower back and travel through the buttock and down the large sciatic nerve in the back of each leg.

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It runs from the back of your pelvis, through your buttocks, and all the way down both legs, ending at your feet. (more…)

Frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis is stiffness, pain, usually intense, together with a limited range of movement in your shoulder.  A frozen shoulder can develop when you stop using the joint normally because of pain, injury, or a chronic health condition, such as diabetes or a stroke. Any shoulder problem can lead to frozen shoulder if you do not work to keep full range of motion. (more…)
